*How To Be Controlled By The Spirit* (II)

_Key Bible Text:_
*If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.* (1 John 1:9-10 (KJV))

_Bible Insight:_
We shall examine three simple steps that have helped many live a Spirit-Controlled life. The first step is to *Examine your life for sin and confess it*

The Psalmist teaches us that if we harbor sin in our heart, the Lord will not hear our prayer (Psalm 66:18). The first characteristic of the Holy Spirit is holiness. God is holy and cannot tolerate sin. Simply stated, that means we cannot be filled with the Holy Spirit and have sinful practices in our lives at the same time. Several times in our lives we need "sin checks".

If you recall attending a communion service you may remember that the Word of God challenges a person to "examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread and drink of that cup" (1 Cor. 11:28). In other words, we do not rush up to the communion table and partake of the elements, but we first examine our hearts to see if there is sin in our minds or hearts.

If we take time to examine our hearts, the Holy Spirit will "convict us" and we will know of that which we should repent. So it is when we prepare to be filled with the Spirit. We must first examine ourselves for all known sin and then confess it. If you find sin in your life, don't be surprised if that sin fits a habitual pattern of being "the sin that so easily besets" you. All of us, because of our temperaments, backgrounds, and habits, have a tendency to fall into a sin habit or sins to which we are vulnerable. The good news is they can be forgiven and, through the Holy Spirit's power, be overcome.

MEDITATION:
*It is possible for anyone to be filled with the Spirit. It is important that anyone willing to be so filled must begin by confessing all known sin. No one can be filled with the Spirit if he tenaciously clings to a sin habit he is unwilling to forsake*
