*What to Expect When Filled With The Spirit*

*For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.* (Romans 8:5 (KJV))

_Bible Insight:_
Most of the misunderstanding about the Holy Spirit's work in the life of the believer falls into the category of what to expect. Instead of mentioning the faulty expectations many people have, let us look at the Scriptures. Galatians 5:22,23 lists the nine fruit of the Spirit, or we could call them "results" of the Spirit. In counselling situations I like to call them "strengths", for they provide us the strength to overcome our natural weaknesses. In that vein, look at the first three fruit of the Spirit. They are emotions:love, joy, and peace. 

When a person is filled with the Spirit, he will have emotional control. All of us, according to our temperament, background, and life experiences are out of control as far as God's standards are concerned. That is why we sin. But when we are filled with or controlled by the Spirit (which I what "filled" really means), we will have emotional control. And that is what is significant about the control of the Holy Spirit--we are in emotional control. 

As Paul said in Ephesians 5:18, we are not to be controlled by wine, which makes people lose emotional control. Instead, we are to be controlled by the Holy Spirit, which produces emotional control. As we shall see later, anger -- the number-one destroyer of marriage and family life -- is an emotion that is brought under control by "love, joy, peace, patience, long-suffering," etc The same is true for many of the other emotions that easily get out of control due to our natures. These emotions are brought into control when we are filled with the Spirit.

But we aren't instructed to understand His plans, but to TRUST HIM and be secure in the knowledge that He's working everything to ultimately turn out for our good.  God won't mismanage your life.
