*Anger, Temperament & Marriages* (II)

_Key Bible Text:_
*If you become angry, do not let your anger lead you into sin, and do not stay angry all day.* (Ephesians 4:26 (GNB))

_Bible Insight:_
Anger is a subtle force which circulates through many people who aren't even aware of its influence. I think of a wife who complained, "I have lost all feeling for my husband." Whenever I hear that lament, I probe for the spouse's trait or habit which upsets her, and it usually does not take long to expose it. In this woman's case, it was his refusal to buy her a $58.95 garbage disposal. When he added insult to injury by saying, "My mother never had a garbage disposal, and I don't see why you need one," she became infuriated. In a matter of weeks her feeling for him had vanished.

This woman was a Sunday school department superintendent and a dedicated Christian wife and mother, but she did not realise that love and hate despise one another's company. Doubtless, this is the reason the Bible so pointedly commands, "Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them" (Colosians 3:19). *In other words, bitterness or love may be expressed, but a relationship cannot admit both simultaneously.* This woman confessed her sin of anger, was filled with the Spirit in my office, and went home to love her husband. He could cope with her anger, but all that love finally got to him. One Saturday morning three weeks later he surprised her with a garbage disposal.

One of the most alarming cases of anger I have ever dealt with concerned a young Christian mother who was having flashes of resentment toward her three-week-old baby. She had experienced no such feelings toward her first two little girls, but she tearfully lamented, "I think I am losing my mind and am afraid I might lose control and do something to hurt my son."

It only took a few questions to uncover a bitter, hostile spirit toward her father, who had been dead for five years. Rather than losing her mind, that woman was letting her pent-up anger construct an emotional current of hatred that was short-circuiting her normal love feelings. All it took to straighten her out was repentance of her sin of anger and the control of her mind by the Holy Spirit so that she no longer dwelt on her father's rejection, abuse, and attempt to molest her. Had she not been able to change her thinking pattern through the Spirit's power, her father would have hounded her from his grave into an emotional breakdown or worse. Such needless tragedies occur every day.
