*Anger, Temperament & Marriages* (V)
_Key Bible Text:_
*Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.*
(Ephesians 4:31, 32 (KJV))
_Bible Insight:_
Want to learn the steps to overcoming anger? We have four other steps which we shall consider today. We previously discussed the first two steps, namely, _face anger as a sin_ and _confess your anger as a sin_
3. _Ask God to take away this habit pattern_ (1John 5:14,15). Anger is not merely a sin but a habit. Now that you are a Christian, you are no longer a slave to habit and even have a new power overcome it. Thus, when anger occurs, acknowledge it as wrong, confess it in the name of Jesus Christ, and enjoy His cleansing. You should also ask for removal of this habit pattern, knowing that anything you ask within his will He promises to do. Therefore, you can confidently expect this awful habit to gradually fade away. Christians may be victims of a habit but they do not have to be its slave.
4. _Ask for the filling of the Holy Spirit_ (Luke 11:13). Every time you sin, it is wise to make this request. Some bible teachers believe we are automatically refilled with the Spirit the moment we confess our sin, and they may be right. But since I have yet to find a scripture to prove they, I prefer to ask.
5. _Give thanks for the source of your irritation_ (1Thessalonians 5:18). It is essential that you change your thought patterns about the cause of your anger. That begins by thanking God in and for that circumstance or for that person (Ephesians 5:19,20), realizing that it happened for your good (Romans 8:28). It may not have been good in itself, but it happened for your good. Be sure you never permit your mind to dwell on that old cause of your anger. If you do, immediately follow this procedure all over again, ending with the giving of thanks.
6. _Repeat this formula every time you get angry_ Habits weren't built in a day, and they won't disappear overnight, either. But as you use this formula, the incidence of anger will gradually melt away. In my own case, I honestly have to admit that once in a while I am still forced to confess a flash of temper, but so less frequently than 30 years ago (about a 300 percent improvement) that it is like being a different person.
MEDITATION:
*These teachings are for those who are willing to let go of less-than-the-best version of themselves* I join Paul to say *"I pray that your love will keep on growing more and more, together with true knowledge and perfect judgment, so that you will be able to choose what is best. Then you will be free from all impurity and blame on the Day of Christ."* (Philippians 1:9,10)
