NUMBERS 32 LESSONS: LEARN FROM THE PAST

*NUMBERS 32 LESSONS: LEARN FROM THE PAST*
_Key Bible Text:_
*That is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to explore the land. They went as far as Eshcol Valley and saw the land, but when they returned, they discouraged the people from entering the land which the LORD had given them.*
(Numbers 32:8-9 (GNB)
*_Bible Insight:_*
"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.", warned the noted philosopher, George Santayana. This is indeed one of the sad great truths about human history. When Moses confronted the Children of Gad and Reuben, he drove home his point by referring to the sad story that led to the extra 20 years of aimless wondering suffered by the Israelites in the wilderness.
In other words, he made them realize that if they follow through on their request, they would inevitably repeat a sad history that led to the loss of an entire generation, because all who were of that generation except those below age 20, had all died in the wilderness-- with the exception of Aaron, Moses, Joshua and Caleb!
What's the point here? Know when to REMEMBER history. The problem of Nigeria today is partly because Nigeria failed to teach History in schools. History should be taught to guide the present generation to do the right things and make the right decision. A real story of what happened to real people is more effective in correcting and guiding people that thousand words of instructions without the aid of the illustration of history.
Embrace the place of reading biographies and autobiographies. (Auto)biographies are the history of people who have also been where you are now standing today albeit with a little difference here and there but the same relatable lesson.
MEDITATION:
*"The only thing we learn from history is that we learn nothing from history."* -- Friedrich Hegel
